Team Members from Trigon Hotels graduate with Cert in Environmental Sustainability Management

Trigon Hotels has taken another step forward in its sustainability journey and now has two certified ‘Green Managers’ among its team members.

Edel Kavanagh, Deputy General Manager and Nicole O’Leary, Assistant Front Office Manager were among the first cohort to complete the Certificate in Environmental Sustainability Management in Hospitality at Cork College of Further Education and Training – Westside Hospitality Campus. The course builds upon the ‘50 Shades Greener’ programme.

Trigon Hotels is passionate about sustainability, setting ambitious goals to reduce energy consumption and waste while lowering its carbon footprint. A rainwater harvesting system provides water for its rooftop vegetable and herb garden. Other initiatives include building a Bee Hotel and signing up to the Irish Pollinator Plan.

The hotel also created a ‘Greening Team’ and a ‘Greening Manifesto’ to encourage a more environmentally aware culture within the hotel. The green team has already completed the six-month ‘50 Shades Greener’ training programme.

Carmel Lonergan, Group Director of Operations for Trigon Hotels said, “We are thrilled to be another step further in our sustainability journey, which at the core is how we operate with integrity within our community. Educating and upskilling our teams is a key part of Trigon Hotels becoming a truly sustainable company. The certificate in environmental sustainability has both supported and given our teams confidence to take actions in our properties which will help us achieve our overall sustainable goals.”

Raquel Noboa, CEO of Fifty Shades Greener said, “Reducing carbon emissions should be something that becomes paramount in our daily routines if we really want to provoke a mind-set change. Environmental education is key to driving this transformation and the general education system has a responsibility to not only prepare learners for the world of work, but provide them with the skills to influence employers, politicians and the wider society.  This can be achieved through teaching learners how to measure, manage and monitor carbon emissions.  When you do not measure something, you cannot manage it. I am so proud of our Cork Hospitality alumni, they are taking environmental sustainability in their stride and will stand out from their peers in the next couple of years as qualified Green Managers of the sector.”
