What Is Twixmas?

We share the meaning of Twixmas and our top tips on how to spend the occasion.

The term ‘Twixmas’ originates from the archaic word ‘betwixt’, which means ‘between’. Twixmas is the period of time between Christmas and New Year. It’s that lull in between festivities when many people have a few extra days away from the office. With New Year’s on the horizon and Christmas Day done and dusted, it’s the perfect time for a little R&R. Now is the perfect time to make plans so that you’re not at a loose end when this time of year comes around.

Here’s our top things to do this Twixmas!

1. PLAN A STAYCATION

Maybe you’re tired of playing chef, maybe you could use a little break, whatever the reason, a staycation will help you get some much needed relaxation but you won’t have to travel too far for some proper time off. Book exclusive deals at Cork Airport Hotel, Cork International Hotel and The Metropole Hotel with our New Year Room Sale which launches the end of December.

2. SOAK UP THE LAST OF THE FESTIVITIES

The Everyman Theatre and Cork Opera House Christmas panto is not to be missed. Or take to the ice with Cork On Ice (Trigon Hotels Guests can avail of a discount – ask at reception for details).

3. WATCH A FILM

Escape the mayhem of Christmas, make time to snuggle up with your other half or kids and indulge in pure ‘you’ time – catch a Christmas movie in our Cinema Room at the Cork International Hotel with as many blankies, pillows and snacks as you need!

4. INDULGE WITH FRIENDS

If relaxation is your ultimate goal, indulge in an afternoon in our Tea Room, or evening in the Prosecco Lounge at The MET Cork. Choose your idea of the perfect hot beverage or cocktail, lounge in our comfortable armchairs, enjoy treats and tasting platters, and delight in delectable tipples as suggested by our Prosecco concierge. Pure Twixmas bliss!

5. FAMILY GATHERING

With Santa arriving, work nights out and all the Christmas shopping, finding time to spend with extended family can be a struggle. Why not plan a super relaxed family dinner (one where you won’t have to cook or clean!) during Twixmas? It will be a lovely celebration with far less hustle and bustle. All three of our restaurants would be delighted to welcome you and your family for both small and large group bookings.
